Cultural Landscapes - Harris Walnut Orchard
Harris Walnut Orchard (Hollister Hills SVRA)
The Harris Walnut Orchard is an excellent example of one of California's earliest and more successful experimental orchards. While most orchards averaged 967 pounds per acre, the Harris Walnut Orchard reached a record breaking yield of 4 tons per acre. Although the techniques used at this orchard were originally criticized, they were soon adopted by industry. The Walnut Orchard represents one of many potential interpretive elements related to Howard Harris, the former owner of Harris Ranch (present-day Hollister Hills SVRA).
