Friends of El Mirage

With the great increase in OHV use in the state I believe that education of not only our young riders but all riders is key to keeping our resources protected. By education of riders in the diverse area available in the state it will help to lessen the impacts created by OHV use. Mike Wubbels - 3/4/15

The El Mirage off road park has increased use fees to such an extent that this location is now a revenue center for the BLM. By using State funds for the operation and upkeep of this park this allows the income from fees to be used for other out of state BLM activities! Before any more OHV funds are given to El Mirage BLM I suggest an audit of the income from other sources! The BLM charges large fees for all activities at El Mirage. By also gathering California OHV funds they lower the budget for California and then move resources and funds to other states. I am 100% against funding federal employees with State Funds! Robert Koch - 3/4/15

El Mirage receives large fees from users. These funds need to be used at El Mirage. By funding the operation at El. Mirage with State of California funds. The BLM then moves the money to out of state projects. It is not proper for the State OHV fund to keep feeding money into the Federal Government! Robert Koch - 3/4/15

You have allocated time for an archaeologist/biologist to perform cultural surveys, but could you be more specific about where the cultural resources person is working within the El Mirage multi-sub regions? Cody Hanford - 3/19/15

  * Regarding your introductory statement about trash pickup: Who pays for this and what is it specifically? Is it people on the ground picking up trash or is it a trash collection service? *It seems like you are asking for a lot of money to take care of these areas. Could you be more specific about the trails/mileage that will be covered in this grant? Cody Hanford - 3/19/15

Wubbels 3/4/2015 Thank you for your comment. Our intention is to focus on the 16 year and under that need to have a certificate in their possession for taking the ATV training. We agree with adults also need training, but BLM Education grant will be working with adults while Friends of El Mirage is focusing on the youth. That has been our missing link for a long time. Again, education is an on going program, from the time visitors come to El Mirage. Our grant however is focusing on the ATV training and certification of 16 and under. Ed Waldheim - 3/22/15

Thank you for your questions on our Friends of El Mirage Grant Robert Koch 3/4/15 OHV funds are requested to manage the entire BLM 25,850 Ac El Mirage Recreation areas. Friends of El Mirage is doing all of the work for the BLM. Fee moneys, are not diverted to any other area. They stay at El Mirage. There is not enough Fee money to cover all the work done on the ground by Friends of El Mirage . When BLM brings in their personal to do building maintenance, Pay for Restroom Dumping and pay for the Big Trash containers for our clean up, that all comes out of Fee Money. There is no duplication of responsibilities at El Mirage, Friends of El Mirage make sure that it is clear what we are responsible for and what BLM is responsible for . Again, fee money stays in El Mirage and is used for BLM personal when needed to do their job on infra structure and Recreation staff Friends of El Mirage grant takes care of boots on the ground to keep 11 restrooms clean, fix boundary fences, pick up visitors trash , do paining on graffiti areas, do tractor trail maintenance and Signing. Friends of El Mirage also has dedicated staff to do Lake bed Maintenance. Krock 3/4/15 No funds from Fee money are taken any place as you claim. There is an accounting for all fee money that BLM has, and we can assure you, it stays in El Mirage Cody 3/19/2015 The Archaeologist /Biologist is here to make sure that everything Friends of El Mirage is committed to doing has the proper clearances on the ground for pounding sings in ground to trail maintenance , on the ground activities. This this grant includes El Mirage Management Area. 25,850 Ac. 264 miles of Trail in the Coolgardie Sub Region 409 miles of Trail in the Fremont Peak Sub Region 287 miles of trails in the Back Mountain Region 190 miles in the El Mirage Sub Region (everything outside of the El mirage boundary) So as you can see this is a full time job for this Archeologist/Biologist position. It is an incredible undertaking for Friends of El Mirage now to have to sign and be responsible for the access to over 1151 miles of trail, outside of the borders of El Mirage recreation areas. Add to that this recreation areas, you can see our grant has to be able to manage all these areas. BLM has over 3000 miles of designated trails, and Friends of El Mirage is here to help BLM get a 1/3 of those miles of designated trails signed and maintained Coty 3/19/2015 Thank you for asking clarification on Trash Pick up in our Project Description. It is not trash pick up, It is trash clean up. Staff cleans up all the trash left by visitors every place in the El Mirage Recreation area. Trash Pick up, which is the dumpster, that is paid by BLM with Fee Money. Ed Waldheim - 3/22/15

My family and I have been avid off-roaders all of our lives and wholeheartedly support the work of the Friends of El Mirage and all of their efforts in the creation, maintenance and restoration of OHV opportunities. We ask that you fully fund all of their grant applications as they are crucial to the future of OHV. Phil Pulley - 4/5/15

Education is vitally important, especially to our youth, and the key to eliminating the long standing riff between off-roaders and land managers. I hope and pray that some day the attitude of "they are just trying to take away our fun" gets changed to "let's pitch-in and help improve the OHV experience".   Even though these grant applications ask for a huge amount of money, it will go to funding extremely popular areas that the BLM has largely turned over to this group. With coming WEMO designations on top of all the tasks to be done to maintain these areas, they will need as much funding as possible to maintain recreational opportunities. Ed Stovin - 4/5/15
